Building bridges through football

Building bridges through football

NATIONAL » KARNATAKA

Updated: July 5, 2016 08:22 IST

Can a game of football help citizens build bridges betweens locals and those from the north-east who often find themselves isolated in Bengaluru?

On Tuesday, football players from Assam, Mizoram, Manipur and Sikkim, among others will kick off the city’s first North-East Level Football Tournament, which will end in a friendly match with local teams on Wednesday.

“The idea is to familiarise people from Bengaluru as well as people from various tribes and States with each other. Football is a loved sport back home and this is a great opportunity for us to play in Bengaluru,” said Jason Haokip, Thadou FC, Manipur.

Organized by Thadou Football Club (FC), the North-East Level Football Tournament (NEIT Trophy), will see two days of intense matches at the Shantinagar playground on Berlie Street.

Teams comprise players across different communities and tribes from the North-Eastern states.

“Thadou is an ethnic name of a tribe in Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram,” says Rocky Kipgen, Additional General Secretary of the Thadou Students Association, the organizers.
